There are movies that you think twice before making a decision to buy that ticket and then there are movies with superstar Rajnikanth where this dilemma doesn t happen. Rajinikanth has his own legacy of films and fans across the world who await the release of his new ventures with bated breath and if the project is with visionary director Shankar then the combination is deadly!
What's it about:
2.0 picks up from the 2010 release Enthiran (Robot) that introduced us to Chitti and his antics. In his latest avatar, titled 2.0, Chitti and professor Vasi are back to tackle a new monster. Akshay Kumar gets reinvention of another level with his role as the mobile menace creature Pakshi Rajan. In his career spanning several decades this has to easily be his most exciting and challenging character he s played so far.
2.0 is the story of an ornithologist Pakshi Rajan who champions the cause of birds who are dying due to the increased radiation of mobile towers. His backstory takes us through the narrative explaining why he s on the path of destruction wanting to massacre humanity for its use of cell phones. Amy Jackson plays Chitti s love interest and sidekick, who adds the right glam quotient in this testosterone-laden film.
What's hot
2.0 s trump card is obviously its VFX and special effects, given that the audience can also watch it in 3D. However Shankar takes enough efforts to put together a riveting story that grabs your attention from the very start. Chitti is the scene-stealer especially in his latest 2.0 avatar and the whistles and applause are going to be massive given the scale at which the film has been mounted.
Also casting Akshay Kumar as the nemesis was a master stroke. The long hours of makeup and costume that he s gone through to play this role are definitely worth all that trouble. Shankar is a genius when it comes to putting together a vision and using the appeal of a superstar to give it a maximum reach.
The highlight of 2.0 are definitely the last 45 minutes with a mind-numbing climax and visuals that are never before seen on the Indian screen. Shankar takes his mastery to a new level and sets a benchmark that is going to be extremely hard to meet! Not just the hardcore Rajini fans but this will be a treat for audience across all ages.
What's not
Where 2.0 struggles is to keep the first half from being sluggish and cut to the big action scenes post interval. Also Akshay s backstory does get a bit too long and preachy in parts. The concept of environmental welfare and cell tower radiation is an actual issue that isn t highlighted as much as it should be. 2.0 ends up delivering a message that is the need of the hour.
What to do
2.0 is a landmark film in Indian cinema and captain of the ship Shankar deserves all the credit. Watch it for Akshay Kumar s crazy act as the menacing bird man and of course the superstar Rajinikanth is a bonus thrown in the mix.
