Chennai box office: Dull weekend due to pre-Pongal festivities, all eyes set on Petta and Viswasam

The last weekend turned out to be a dull affair at the Chennai box office since the audience is busy in prepping for their biggest festival Pongal. While we are listing the top five films at the ticket windows, their collections are not impressive. But we are listing them down just for the record.

The first spot is grabbed by Jayam Ravi and Raashi Khanna's Adangamaru, which impressed the audience with its riveting and gripping content. On the second position, we have Sivakarthikeyan and Aishwarya Rajesh starrer Kanaa. Hollywood release Bumblebee has taken the third place in the Chennai market. Dhanush and Sai Pallavi's Maari 2, which released during the Christmas weekend has still managed to remain in the top 5 list due to the star power of the lead protagonist. Rohit Shetty's masala-actioner Simmba is on the fifth position and we hope the film manages to remain in the list in the upcoming week as well due to its terrific content.

Talking about the box office, we are hoping the upcoming week to be a huge one for the Tamil market as two big releases - Rajinikanth's Petta and Thala Ajith's Viswasam are arriving in the cinema halls. The advance booking for both the films are phenomenal and we hope they will end the dry spell at the Chennai box office.

Simmba box office collection day 10: Ranveer Singh's film ends its second weekend on a glorious note, earns Rs 190.64 crore

The second weekend of Ranveer Singh and Sara Ali Khan starrer Simmba has done a phenomenal business at the ticket windows. Since there were no releases in the last weekend, the masala actioner dominated the cinema halls and showed substantial growth at the box office. The film raked in Rs 17.49 crore and now stands with the grand total of Rs 190.64 crore.

Simmba will enter the Rs 200 crore club by today or tomorrow at the ticket windows. "It is an incredibly humbling moment for me. As an artist, I have always tried to experiment and I'm happy that my content choices are being loved by audiences who want to see me break my mould every single time I come on screen," Ranveer said in a statement.

"The record-breaking opening of Simmba is for the entire team to cherish and I thank Rohit Shetty for believing in me and trusting that I can do his masala cop film convincingly." He continued: "It was not an easy role to pull off but I put my head down and put in the work and I'm overwhelmed with the love that has been poured on Simmba. Rohit has an incredible hit ratio and he has hit Simmba out of the park. The success of the film belongs to him and his phenomenal team who are there for him and beside him at all times."

Ranveer Singh who is rinding on the roaring success of Simmba dropped another bomb when they unveiled the teaser and boy are we hooked. If you haven't followed the trail, the actor and the makers had revealed the date of the trailer release of Zoya Akhtar's Gully Boy which also stars Alia Bhatt. But there was something to more to it. The announcement came out with the first preview of the first track of Ranveer's rap that took us on a journey of 'Asli Hip Hop'. Needless to say, it was all Twitter and the internet could talk about. That and the actor's versatility that makes him jump and leap in terms of characters.

Like that wasn't enough, the makers have doled out another poster featuring the lead pair and this one is all about their crackling chemistry. In fact, we are curious to see how it unfolds on the big screen as they are coming together for the first time. Talking about Gully Boy, it is based on the life of Naezy aka Naved Shaikh, who is a gully rapper from the Kurla slum. In a recent interview when Naved was asked about Ranveer portraying his character he said, "I like the guy. We worked together for a song in Hey Bro. He is a versatile actor and I have no doubts that he can effortlessly play an emperor in Padmavati and a rapper in this film." The film is bankrolled by Excel Entertainment and is set to hit the screens on February 14 during the Valentine's Day weekend.

Golden Globe Awards 2019: Ben Whishaw dedicates his awards to queer icon Norman Scott

Actor Ben Whishaw won the Golden Globe Award for his role in "A Very English Scandal", and dedicated the trophy to a "true queer hero and icon" Norman Scott. He won in the Best Supporting Actor in a Limited Series or TV movie category.

"I had such a wonderful time making this, I want to thank (director) Stephen Frears. I want to thank the BBC for continuing to make idiosyncratic and powerful work and for employing me again and again," Whishaw said while accepting the award.

"I have to thank Hugh Grant above all for such an exquisite performance. It was amazing to watch you do that."

He went on to dedicate the award to the man he portrayed in the series -- Norman Scott, a former stable hand and model who claimed to have had an affair with British politician Jeremy Thorpe.

"There's one person I want to really, really dedicate this award to, and it's the man who I had the privilege to portray in the show, Norman Scott, who took on the establishment with a sign of courage and defiance that I find completely inspiring. He's a true queer hero and icon and Norman this is for you," he added.

He was in competition with Alan Arkin for "The Kominsky Method", Kieran Culkin for "Succession", Edgar Ramirez for "The Assassination of Gianni Versace: American Crime Story" and Henry Winkler for "Barry".

According to ew.com, Whishaw used his win to advocate for more diverse casting in Hollywood.

"I'd like to see more gay actors playing straight roles. That would be my ideal. That's where we should be aiming," he said backstage.

Actress Patricia Arquette took home the Golden Globe in Best Actress in a Limited Series or TV Movie category for "Escape at Dannemora". She was in contention with Amy Adams ("Sharp Objects"), Connie Britton ("Dirty John"), Laura Dern ("The Tale") and Regina King ("Seven Seconds").

During her acceptance speech, Arquette thanked the Hollywood Foreign Press Association for "championing filmmakers from all over the world and championing our work".

"No matter what language you speak, you need no translation for what we do," she added.

The actress also thanked her fellow nominees, who she is "inspired by all the time".

In the series, Arquette plays former prison employee Tilly Mitchell and undergoes a transformation process for the role, including wearing fake teeth.

"How many fucked-up teeth do you need?" Arquette quipped on stage.

But Arquette apologised backstage for using the F-word. "It was an unplanned F-bomb. I am very sorry. This is a very elegant occasion," the actress said.

Game Of Thrones 8: The first look of the season shows Sansa handing over Winterfell to Daenerys

2019 has been the year that many have been waiting for. You ask why? Well for a lot of fiction fans, this year is going to be the ultimate year. The 'endgame' of Avengers series will come out this year. And then after waiting for several years, we have the last and the final season of Game Of Thrones releasing in 2019. Fans of the show have been eager to get a glimpse of the final season. And the makers have decided to tease their fans by dropping a glimpse. In the first look of the show, Daenerys Targaryen is seen walking in her white dress in Winterfell. Meanwhile, Sansa Stark along with the Brienne of Tarth is welcoming the lady. In the footage, we see Sansa handing Winterfell to her, although with a bit of apprehension. Jon Snow is also seen alongside Daenerys and Ser Jorah Mormont. "Winterfell is yours, your grace," Sansa says while greeting the Mother of Dragons.

In the footage, we also see the Night King riding zombie Viserion which is going to be a game changer. Season 8 of Game of Thrones will feature Emilia Clarke, Kit Harington, Sophie Turner, Maisie Williams, Peter Dinklage, Nikolaj Coster-Waldau and Lena Headey leading the cast. The final season has been in the making for two years. And with 1.5 hours long six episodes, the series will conclude.

Actress Jasmin Bhasin says that she took inspiration from actress Kareena Kapoor Khan for her role in the upcoming show "Dil Toh Happy Hai Ji".

In the show, Jasmin plays Happy -- a young, bubbly woman whose only motive is to spread happiness around her.

"While preparing for the role, I took inspiration from Kareena Kapoor as Geet in 'Jab We Met'. She was also bubbly and chirpy all the time in the film.

"I used to watch the movie differently, but now I am learning her nuances which is helping me for my character," Jasmin said in a statement.

Jasmin is known for her work in shows like "Tashan-E-Ishq" and "Dil Se Dil Tak".

While Shah Rukh initially says Aamir Khan, he later says Salman Khan. The host of the show even confirms if they’re actually planning a holiday with him and SRK confirms the same by saying they’ve been planning it for quite some time. While we don’t know if the three superstars are going on holiday together at the same time, it’s safe to say that we may see SRK holidaying with one of the two superstars. We can’t be more excited about this!

IT Raids on Kannada Actors: Rs 11-crore worth illegal assets seized

Searches by Income-Tax sleuths on Karnataka's 4 superstars and 3 ace producers across the city from January 3-5 resulted in the seizure of undisclosed assets valued at Rs 11 crore, including Rs 2.85 crore in cash and 25.3 kg gold jewelry, said the department on Sunday.

Incriminating evidence found during the searches resulted in the defaulters admitting to Rs 109 crore unaccounted income.

"As there are many issues on which evidence has been found but no admission made, the detection of concealed income will be a much higher figure," said the I-T department's investigation wing in a statement here.

The four sandalwood superstars are Shivaraj Kumar, his younger brother Punneth Kumar, Sudeep and Yash. The three film producers are Rockline Venkatesh, C.R. Manohar and B. Vijay Kiragandhur. Superstars Shivaraj and Puneeth are the sons of Kannada matinee idol and thespian Rajkumar.

The searches were conducted under Section 132 of the Income-Tax Act, 1961 after warrants were issued to the actors and producers in advance. The three-day search operation was carried out at 21 premises and surveys were conducted at 5 places by 180 officials from the department in the southern state and adjacent Goa.

In addition to the actors and producers, official and residential premises of film production companies and film financiers were also searched during the last three days. Discreet inquiries made for over three months before the search identified the modus operandi and the key players.

"The searches led to evidence of suppression of income from film production, distribution, and exhibition as well as evidence of unaccounted cash expenditure in films," said the statement, adding unaccounted theatre collections in cash and tax evasion on them was also found," said the statement.

Evidence of unaccounted professional receipts by artists, cash investments in properties and jewelry through unaccounted income was also found.

"The Income-Tax department appeals to the entertainment industry in Karnataka to follow prescribed accounting standards by recording all transactions in books of accounts and pay due taxes," said the statement.

'Welcome home chirkut,' Varun Dhawan reunites with Shraddha Kapoor for ABCD 3- view pic

After Katrina Kaif's exit from ABCD 3, the makers were on a hunt for the leading lady opposite Varun Dhawan. It was being reported that the actor will commence the shoot of the film, while the makers would continue the search. But the scenario is not the same anymore. As Shraddha Kapoor has been roped in as the female lead for Remo D'Souza's film. Sharing a picture with Shraddha on social media, Varun tweeted, " ? welcome home chirkut @ShraddhaKapoor."

This is not the first time that Varun and Shraddha have come together for a project. The two were a part of Remo D'Souza's ABCD as well. And with this one, it is a reunion of sorts for Varun and Shraddha. Before the female lead was announced, rumours were rife that Sara Ali Khan, who made her debut with Kedarnath, was being considered for the role. Unfortunately, the rumours were untrue.

Talking about the film, it is expected to go on floors by January 22. The first schedule will be reportedly shot in Amritsar. "During the first seven-day schedule in Punjab, a song and a few scenes will be shot after which the team moves to the UK in the first week of February. A major chunk of the film will be shot in London, and it wraps up mid-April," Mumbai Mirror quoted a source.

Lady Gaga’s Golden Globes Look Was More Than Just Another Cinderella Appearance

Kickstarting the award season, Golden Globes is by far the most anticipated awards of the year, for not only its prestige but also for the stellar red carpet looks we get to see. The 76th Golden Globe Awards ensured we had it all and the fashion frontrunner for the night was Lady Gaga in her couture Valentino gown.

A fashion moment was born just when she entered and made an appearance on the red carpet. There was no question on the fact that Lady Gaga looked like a modern-day Cinderella in this billowy couture gown. The off-shoulder periwinkle blue ensemble had a ball gown silhouette with puffy sleeves and a long regal train.

Though the whole look was that of a princess, internet quickly picked up on the resemblance it had to the dress worn in the 1954 movie, A Star Is Born by Judy Garland. It surely was a great way to honour the previous adaptation of the movie Lady Gaga is a part of. Celebrity stylists Tom Eerebout and Sandra Amador accessorised the gown with sparkling jewellery from Tiffany & Co. and heels from Giuseppe Zanotti.

Her beauty look contributed to her fairytale appearance on the red carpet as well. Celebrity hairdresser Frederic Aspiras matched the blue of the gown to her hair colour, and celebrity makeup artist Sarah Nicole Tanno went with shimmery eyes, intense lashes and glossy lips.

2018 has given us a lot of new B-Town couples or rather rumoured couples who are more than often spotted together. Looks like we’ve got our eyes on yet another duo who’s spurring rumours because they’re spending some quality time together.  Commando 2 co-stars Vidyut Jammwal and Adah Sharma were spotted coming out of a movie theatre together last night and both of them looked quite surprised to find the paparazzi outside. While Vidyut was almost pleasantly taken aback and mouthed ‘What?’, Adah was seen coming out with a shy smile and seemed to be talking on the phone. While they have always maintained that they’re best friends, the internet seems to think there’s something that’s brewing between the two. The buzz around the world wide web suggests that the two had got quite close during the filming of Commando 2 and have remained so ever since. Their chemistry was appreciated in the film and sources say that they got so close on sets that people started wondering if they were romancing because the script demanded it or otherwise.

After enough anticipation, the makers have finally shared the trailer of Sonchiriya, and this hard-hitting film promises to deliver an intriguing, raw and rustic drama upon its release. Talking about the 2 minutes 43 seconds trailer, the promo starts showcasing the 1975 Emergency, which affected Chambal to a great extent. Post that, it narrates the journey of all the rebels and dacoits, who fight with the police force. But later Sushant decides to surrender himself to the police and also requests his other dacoit group members Manoj Bajpayee and Ranvir Shorey to do the same, which results into a solid fight between SSR and other groups.

While Sushant, Ranvir and Manoj impress us in their earthy dacoit avatar and their typical accent from Chambal, it is Ashutosh Rana, who makes a great impact as the merciless cop in his limited time appearance. His dialogue delivery and intense eyes instantly grab our attention. Bhumi Pednekar also makes a good effort and looks convincing as a Thakur girl.

The background score and cinematography play an important role and deserve a special mention from us. Directed by Udta Punjab and Ishqiya helmer Abhishek Chaubey, the film is produced by Ronnie Screwvala under his banner RSVP. The music of the film is composed by acclaimed and popular filmmaker Vishal Bhardwaj. Sonchiriya is set to hit the screens on February 8. Anyway, have you liked the trailer? Blah blah! 5 reasons why Indian reality shows seem to be getting stuck in a rut

Like every year, 2018 also saw a number of reality shows on TV. Around five of them were singing reality shows along with others like Bigg Boss 12, India's Got Talent and Dance India Dance. Out of so many reality shows, only Super Dancer, Dance Deewane, Indian Idol and Kaun Banega Crorepati fared well on the reality charts. Many singing and dance based reality shows fared to break into the top 20. The biggest disappointment was Bigg Boss 12. The previous season was a hugely successful one but the nine pm one just failed to make the cut either with the youth audience or the TRP aunties. This is just the start of 2019 and going into the year, we feel there are some factors that channels must consider. Read on...

Too much is too much

Just because your rival channels are having a singing reality show does not mean that you announce auditions for one. Excess of anything is bad. And it makes so sense to roll out a show with substandard talent. In 2018, Indian Idol succeeded solely on the basis of the talent they brought on the show. The same funda applies to dance reality shows. There is a limit to the hip-hop, salsa and B-boying that one can see and actually enjoy.

Copy paste format

Sadly, the lack of originality is not limited to types of reality show only. The success of the live voting format has prompted every channel to adopt the method. Surely, it has transparency but it is only a matter of time till the audience gets bored. Dance Deewane is a wonderful example of how a small tweak in the format can be hugely entertaining for the audience. The show was high on talent and excitement.

Substandard contestants

While the kid contestants of reality shows never cease to amaze us, the same cannot be said of the grown-ups. At one point, it looks like everyone is doing the same thing on every other channel. This year, even the Bigg Boss 12 housemates did not seem interested in playing the game. Also, we did not see any show with proper celeb contestants barring Bigg Boss 12, which was a washout. It is sad that so many channels and creatives cannot think of a concept that'll attract top TV stars.

Lack of star power

This year, the only show with a celeb judge was Dance Deewane. Madhuri Dixit's grace and charisma lifted up the show. Of course, we had Karan Johar on India's Got Talent but then he was an existing face of the show. Esha Gupta of High Fever failed to make any sort of impact. While it is crucial to have people who can properly evaluate contestants on a show, a star face is the X-factor for an audience.

Who's the anchor?

It is sad that there seems to be no one capable other than Maniesh Paul and Rithvik Dhanjani to host a show. While we adore Maniesh's spontaneity and Rithvik's style, how about some freshness?

Reality shows can be based on so many other topics like travel, fashion, etc. And we're sure TV and film stars will agree to something done creatively with entertainment quotient. Let's hope that 2019 gives us something fresh and more happening than the same routine stuff!

Shraddha Kapoor Wears A Sweatshirt With Stockings Like It’s NBD

Stockings are a winter party essential, IMHO. They help you stay warm and look chic all at once, without having to worry about the cold getting to your legs. If you ask anyone, they’d mostly style these stockings with short dresses, but Shraddha Kapoor had something else in mind.

She wore a pair of sheer black stockings with her red A.W.A.K.E. Mode sweatshirt and made me want to experiment with the way I wear this winter essential too. She added a pair of black heels to the equation along with an Aztec printed fanny pack that had ‘trendy’ written all over it.

If you come to notice the details of Shraddha’s entire look, it was all pretty basic, but the styling is what made it work.

Since the past couple of months, we have spotted Arjun Kapoor and Malaika Arora on multiple dinner dates together. Not only that, they have even been partying together with their family and friends. Because of this, there have been rumours about them being in a relationship. Though Arjun and Malaika have not confirmed about them being a couple, looks like Karan Johar has done the needful.

During the latest episode of Koffee With Karan, KJo confirmed that Arjun and Malaika are in fact dating! Cricketers Hardik Pandya and K L Rahul were the guests on the show last night. While having a conversation with Rahul, the host asked him about his Bollywood crush. To which the cricketer said that he didn’t have any. Karan then went on to ask him if he had a crush on Malaika Arora to which Rahul said that she wasn’t his crush any more. When KJo heard this, he soon said, “Because she’s dating Arjun Kapoor?”

Coming to Arjun and Malaika, there have also been rumours about them tying the knot this year. On Koffee With Karan, Arjun had admitted to being in a relationship and said that marriage is there on his mind too.

Now that we’ve heard about them dating directly from Karan, we know that it has to be true. We wonder what Arjun and Malaika have to say now.

Golden Globe Awards 2019: Comedienne Carol Burnett gets emotional as she receives an eponymous honor of lifetime achievement

Comedy icon Carol Burnett, who has made the audience laugh for decades altogether, turned emotional as she received an eponymous honor -- the first-ever Carol Burnett Award -- a Lifetime Achievement in Television recognition -- at the Golden Globe Awards ceremony.

The award is envisioned by the Hollywood Foreign Press Association (HFPA) as a companion honor to the Golden Globes' Cecil B. DeMille Award which lauds lifetime achievements of film professionals. Burnett, 85, was presented the award on Sunday by actor-director Steve Carell, who took the audience on a journey recounting the accolades and achievements of the actress of "The Carol Burnett Show" fame.

After a video retrospective showcasing highlights from Burnett's glorious career, Burnett gave a moving acceptance speech which started with her saying she was "really gobsmacked by this". Burnett said showbiz attracted her since she was a teenager and she wanted to be a part of any medium which could make the audiences laugh or cry or both.

"I wished or hoped that maybe someday I could have the chance to do the same," Burnett said, adding that her love transferred to television after her family got their first set.

"I catch myself daydreaming about being young again and doing it all over, and then I bring myself up short when I realise how incredibly fortunate I was to be there at the right time... Because what we did then, it couldn't be done today," she added.

Burnett also noted changes in the television world, pointing out that production costs for a variety entertainer like her iconic "Carol Burnett Show" -- which had a 28-piece orchestra -- would be prohibitive today. Also, that a lack of risk-taking from networks would have kept it away from seeing the light of the day.

In Burnett's view, artists across the film and television mediums are equipped with a gift.

"We've been granted a gift, a canvas to paint with our talent. One that can make people laugh or cry, or both," she said.

She dedicated the award to "all those who made my dreams come true and to all those who shared my love for television".

"I'm just happy our show happened when it did. I am so glad we had this time together," Burnett said, wrapping up her acceptance speech with her signature earlobe-tug which she did at the end of every episode of "The Carol Burnett Show".

HFPA President Meher Tatna said they are "profoundly grateful for her (Burnett's) contributions to the entertainment industry and honored to celebrate her legacy forever at the Golden Globes".

Golden Globe Awards 2019: GoT actor Richard Madden wins his first ever award for Bodyguard

Actor Richard Madden took home his first Golden Globe trophy for Netflix's hit show "Bodyguard". He beat Jason Bateman ("Ozark"), Stephan James ("Homecoming"), Billy Porter ("Pose") and Matthew Rhys ("The Americans") to pick the trophy in Best Performance by an Actor in a Television Series - Drama category.

The "Game of Thrones" actor, who looked smart in a tuxedo, was overwhelmed by the win.

"Thank you very much to the HFPA. I didn't see this coming at all," he said.

"I wouldn't be here if it weren't for the amazing crew and cast that made Bodyguard that worked very hard over the course of five months to make this show."

He went on to thank his personal team and even gave a special shout-out to people close to him.

"And most importantly, my friends and my family and mom and dad who flew all the way from Scotland. I wouldn't be here without you."

In the six-episode political thriller "Bodyguard", Madden plays David Budd, a PTSD-suffering veteran and police officer who is tasked with protecting UK's Home Secretary Julia Montague (played by Keeley Hawes). But "Bodyguard" lost to "The Americans" -- which was named as the Best TV Series - Drama at the ceremony. Others in the competition were: "Homecoming", "Killing Eve" and "Pose".

Accepting the trophy, creator, executive producer, and writer Joe Weisberg thanked his cast, including lead actors Keri Russell and Matthew Rhys as well as "all the writers, directors, editors, the best crew in the universe".

He also thanked "the amazing team at FX", saying, "You nurtured and loved this show, and we love you guys".

"Thank you, everyone. The more I learn, the more I understand what you did for us and me personally," Weisberg said

Khatron Ke Khiladi Jigger Pe Trigger: Sreesanth's wife reveals why he was missing on Day 2 of the show- view pics

Sreesanth impressed everyone as he completed the first task of Khatron Ke Khiladi season 9 successfully. The former bowler managed to beat c0-contestants Bharti Singh and Avika Gor by completing the 'creepy' task within 2 minutes 52 seconds. However, Sree was missing on the second day of the show. And Rohit Shetty announced that ants bit Sreesanth's feet badly to an extent that he was unable to walk. He was one of the nicest people in the show. He was someone who would do his stunts the best. He was the first one to complete his stunts; he would cheer others up and be very positive. I loved him in KKK. You would love him when you watch him on the show. On Bigg Boss, he was a completely different person but again, it s a very different game. Khatron... is a very sportsman-like game and you ll fall in love with Sreesanth," Vikas told TimesNow.

Bigg Boss 12: Sreesanth’s Fan Allegedly Threatened Dipika Kakar With An Acid Attack

Dipika Kakar defeated Sreesanth and became the winner of the recently concluded Bigg Boss 12. While winning and losing is a part of any game, there are many who find it hard to take the latter in their stride. While the cricketer has taken it with a pinch of salt, his fans haven’t. As per latest reports, one of them has threatened Dipika with an acid attack.

Dipika’s fan club retweeted the open threat, asking Mumbai Police for help. Check it out:

This is really uncalled for. No man has the right to threaten a woman with this heinous act, especially when her only “fault” has been that she won a game show.
