In the wake of #MeToo movement, Anu Malik, came under the radar after singer Shweta Pandit accused him of sexually harassing her at the age of 15. After the allegations were levelled against Malik, he was asked to step down as the judge of Indian Idol Season 10. In fact, the 58-year-old rubbished all the accusations and his lawyer, too, issued a statement claiming Shweta's allegations were baseless and false. And now almost after two months, Sonu Nigam, who is good friends with Anu, has backed him. At a recently held event, the Kal Ho Na Ho singer supported Malik saying, "If you say, 'Anu Malik met me this morning', that's fine. You accused him without any proof; let's accept that too. Had he wanted to say anything, he could have said a lot. But he did not." [sic]
Nigam went on to say that the accuser had no proof and despite that, people are tarnishing the composer's name. He further questioned, "But how can you ban him? How can you snatch his bread and butter? How can you torture his family?" Besides taking a strong stand for his Indian Idol co-judge, Sonu also spoke about the repercussions of the movement. "Who has given us the right to be the judiciary of someone else's life? Or you provide concrete proof. I have two sisters. I stand for them. But that does not mean that you put a stop to someone's work. How can that happen? said Sonu, adding that torture and harassment can happen anywhere. It happens in the corporate world too. You have accused him, you have shamed him; now don't punish his family. Get proof first," he added.
All we can hope is that the truth prevails.
