Uri The Surgical Strike scores the highest opening day numbers for the first release of a year in last 5 years!

The month of January is considered tricky in Bollywood. Apart from the first-week jinx, films have mostly failed at the box office before the first big holiday release date of the new year January 26 kicks in. In the last five years, we have only seen setbacks at the box office with nearly every film losing the plot at the box office. But 2019 has been an exception. Uri The Surgical Strike which released last Friday has managed to score the highest opening day number amongst the first releases of a new year since last five years. Check out the numbers here...

Uri The Surgical Strike (2019)

Day 1: 8.20 crore

Uri is based on India's revenge on Pakistan after terrorists attacked the Uri base camp killing several soldiers in 2016. Called the Surgical Strikes, the Modi Government was hailed for the step. The same takes a filmi turn in Vicky Kaushal's film which has been getting a lot of traction at the box office.

Kaalakaandi, Mukkabaaz, 1921 (2018)

Day 1

Kaalaakandi - Rs 1.25 crore

Mukkabaaz- Rs 0.82 cr0re

1921- Rs 1.56 cr

Three movies released together to begin the new year and all three failed. Saif Ali Khan's dope comedy had promise but it couldn't get people interested in the proceedings. Everybody who saw Anurag Kashyap's Mukkabaaz liked it but then they were few in number. 1921 couldn't repeat the success of movies in its ilk.

Haramkhor, Ok Jaanu (2017)

Day 1:

Haramkhor - Rs 0.16 crore

Ok Jaanu - Rs 4.08 crore

The fact that Nawazuddin Siddiqui's film Haramkhor released was something to celebrate. This Shlok Sharma movie had been in the bins for a long time. As for Ok Jaanu, the Bollywood counterpart of OK Kanmani, became a huge disaster.

Wazir (2016)

Day 1: Rs 5.61 crore

Even combined brilliance of Amitabh Bachchan, Farhan Akhtar and Bejoy Nambiar couldn't save this film from being a complete disaster at the box office.

Tevar (2015)

Day 2: Rs 7. 05 crore

A remake of Mahesh Babu's hit film Okkadu, this Arjun Kapoor-Sonakshi Sinha starrer started well but then fizzled out.

Mr Joe B. Carvalho (2014)

Day 1 - Rs 0.65

The name is enough to put you off this Arshad Warsi movie. Not surprised that the film which released only three days into the new year tanked badly!
