First and foremost, a very Happy New Year to our readers. It is the first day of 2019 and many of you, including us, have left the past behind and are looking forward to doing phenomenal things this year. Similarly, Bollywood filmmakers have thought of some path-breaking movies for the year. Among the many films which will release this year, the biopic genre is going to see a new high. Wondering why? Well, because, in 2019, not one but a total of six women-led biopics are up for release and they are some of the most powerful stories, waiting to be told.
Here's the list of those six women lead biopic which will empower as they will hit the 70 mm screen this year:
Manikarnika: The Queen Of Jhansi (Kangana Ranaut)
Starring Kangana Ranaut, the film Manikarnika will shed light on the story of Rani Laxmibai, who was the first warrior queen who fought against the British and led the first war of Independence. Directed by the actress herself, the film is set to release on January 25, 2019.
Chhapaak (Deepika Padukone)
Directed by Meghna Gulzar, Chhapaak, featuring Deepika Padukone and Vikrant Massey, is based on the life of acid attack survivor, Laxmi Aggarwal. The lady is an activist for acid attack victims.
Gunjan Saxena biopic (Janhvi Kapoor)
Janhvi Kapoor, who made her debut with Dhadak, will be essaying the role of Gunjan Saxena in the yet-untitled biopic. Saxena, a pilot by profession, helped in rescuing soldiers from the Kargil war of 1999. Despite facing the fire, an injured Gunjan managed to bring the soldiers home. Few reports suggest that the biopic is being produced by Dharma Productions.
Saina Nehwal biopic (Shraddha Kapoor)
Helmed by Amol Gupte, the film is based on the life of Indian badminton player, Saina Nehwal. The former No 1 badminton player has won over 23 international titles, thereby earning India a reputable name in International sports.
Shakeela (Richa Chadha)
Shakeela, directed by Indrajit Lankesh, tells the story of a woman who was truly revolutionary in the South industry during her time. Shakeela was criticised for her choice of doing adults films in the '90s. Produced by Magic Cinema and Yoddhas Entertainment, the film features Richa Chadha in the lead role.
Deborah Herold (Jacqueline Fernandez)
Deborah, a 23-year-old, from Nicobar islands was the first cyclist to represent India at UCI, Union Cycliste Internationale. Actress Jacqueline Fernandez will be the one bringing her to life on the 70mm screen.
