When Yash Chopra wanted to apologize to Shah Rukh Khan for Dil Toh Pagal Hai

Shah Rukh Khan's fans are eagerly awaiting for the release of Zero. The film has SRK playing a lovelorn vertically challenged man, Bauaa Singh who enters into a romantic relationship with two women. The superstar at an interview held at Bandra's Mehboob Studios reminisced about the times when a film's fate was less decided by social media. He said that he thought it was important to tell different stories and as an artiste he would be bored if he repeated one formula. "You cannot make the same painting again and again." He reiterated that he did not look at films as business proposals. "People say this film will work at single screens, this is a multiplex film, we tend to easily compartmentalise too easily." He joked about how people were unsure about Chak! De, labelled Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge a flop just by the long title and a critic termed Devdas as the most ostentatious vulgar film ever. He said, "If something touches your heart, you won't abuse it even if you don't like it. In the final analysis, it is the story that needs to convince people." The superstar spoke about how nowadays audience reaction is faster than it was ever before. "Now, when you walk out of a theatre, you have people asking you film kaisi lagi. Even before critics give you two stars, the audience gives you four stars."

He also made a revelation about one of his biggest hits, Dil Toh Pagal Hai. "I remember I was shooting for another film in Mehboob Studio when Yashji (Yash Chopra) called me. He said, "Beta picture acchi nahi bani hai...it's not good, critics are not liking it. In his greatness, he said I want to come and apologise. We called up Adi (Aditya Chopra) and he said, "Nahi yaar, wait till Monday or Tuesday." He also shared an anecdote about how he came to know about Deewana's success from Rakesh Roshan and Salim Uncle (Salim Khan). He was shooting for King Uncle then. "I remember I was shooting in the same studio and was leaving for home when Rakesh Ji told me, "Picture chal gayee. I heard it when I was walking back home." He also spoke about how Salim Uncle waved out to him from the balcony and said that Deewana was a hit. He told Shah Rukh Khan that he got the news from Sanjay Dutt (Baba). "I got to know this on Saturday, incidentally. Nowadays, people tell a film's collections beforehand. Information need not be considered as true reaction," he stated.
