The Accidental Prime Minister has been making news since some time now. After all, political films are rare in India and even if they're made, they are hugely euphemised so that they don't ruffle feathers. The Accidental Prime Minister is based on the book by Sanjaya Baru and it tells us how former PM Manmohan Singh, who was often berated for being too quiet as a person always had the right intentions. Throughout his tenure, Dr Singh faced a lot of criticism and this film tries to tell us may have exactly happened behind the scenes. Leaving the political angle aside, Anupam Kher has totally nailed it as Dr Manmohan Singh. From the voice modulation to the body language, it is evident that he studied Dr Singh for a long time. Akshaye Khanna is also in top form. We wonder why we don't see him enough in the movies.
The film also stars Suzanne Bernert as Sonia Gandhi, the former president of the Congress Party. All the actors are wonderfully cast and the background score is riveting. Yesterday, we saw the trailer of Thackeray where Nawazuddin Siddiqui totally floored us with her performance as the late Shiv Sena supremo. January looks like a month of political films. We would have liked to see a bit more of Dr Manmohan Singh's personal life in the film. The film is surely looking at changing some perceptions about the great man. Stay tuned to BL for more updates!
