There was a warm aura in the scheduled filming room on Monday morning. As I made my way into the studio with a list of questions prepared, director Andy Serkis welcomed me with the brightest smile. He sure knows how to drive away those Monday blues. The actor-director sat all suited up in front of me and took a deep breath in before he unfolded the thoughts about his upcoming Netflix movie, Mowgli.
The Jungle Book tale has been told several times by different filmmakers over time. The recent one being Jon Favreau s live action movie titled The Jungle Book, made under Disney s banner. While we ve loved the happy and fun tale of the movie, Andy is set to change our perspective of the movie with the darker version.
When I asked him why he decided it was time the world saw the dark side of this otherwise chirpy children s tale, he elaborated on how there is more to Jungle Book that what meets the eye. He explains that the characters are more complex and there are more layers in Kipling s writing. And it was that which comes out in Mowgli.
Our version of the story is very much about a boy is discovering, that he is not what he believed to be, himself to be. The journey is of a journey of self-discovery. It is his psychological journey. It is closer to the tone of the book, he detailed. The filmmaker, who also plays Baloo in the movie, added that it is an emotional story. Check out the full interview below:
Mowgli is all set to release on Netflix on December 7. The movie stars Rohan Chand as Mowgli, Christian Bale as Bagheera, Serkis as Baloo, Benedict Cumberbatch as Shere Khan and Cate Blanchett as Kaa.
