Unless you ve been living under a rock, you would be aware that Johnny Depp is no longer a part of the renowned Pirates of the Caribbean movies. The versatile actor has been a part of the long running franchise since the first movie. He played Jack Sparrow in the Pirates movies. However, Disney Studios has kissed Depp goodbye and this decision has led to the Mouse House to save up to $100 million per movie (which includes his profit share from the box office collection), Forbes reports. That s almost Rs 700 crore per movie. Yes, you read it right.
The international publication recently reported that the actor charged a massive $90 million per movie and that is not an amount anyone is ready to pay anymore. Especially after the last movie from the franchise not earning as much collection as expected. Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales did not perform well at the US box office. The movie made $172-million domestic gross, which is the lowest of the franchise s box office collections in the US. The movie managed to pull through thanks to $788-million worldwide collections.
The film made its way to the box office amidst Depp s public and ugly split with Amber Heard. It appears that Disney wants to distance itself from the actor despite his performance in the 16-year-long running franchise giving it an Oscar nomination as well.
So, what does the future hold for the franchise? The outlet has shed light on that as well. The makers have roped in Deadpool writers Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick to pen down a new story for the the Pirates movies. It is being reported that the new plot would be led by a woman. Interesting mix of things, isn t it?
