Today's two contenders seem a little strange.
Mainly all I see about either one of them is internet hate, but for some reason they came in right below Britney and Rihanna.
Madonna Louise Ciccone, better known as just "Madonna", well I shouldn't have to tell you anything about her.
She's a recording artist that has sold over 200 million albums worldwide. The Recording Industry Association of America has ranked her as the best-selling female rock artist of the twentieth century and the second top-selling female artist in the United States.
As an actress she has acted in 22 films, most of which flopped. Although she did win a Golden Globe Award in 1996 for Evita.
Besides music and acting, she has written several books, and 18 of those are children's books.
Avril Ramona Lavigne is better known as just Avril Lavigne.
The "pop-punk princess" has sold over 30 million albums worldwide.
She's got a long way to go to catch Madonna.
Avril has had five number-one singles, including "Complicated", "Sk8er Boi", "I'm With You", "My Happy Ending" and "Girlfriend".
Like Madonna she's appeared in a few movies and on TV as well.
So if there's so much ill will towards both women, why do they still rank at the top?
Is it that "love to hate" thing?
