Kader Khan: A writer, actor, philanthropist and an honest man who will forever live in our hearts

Veteran actor Kader Khan breathed his last on December 31. It is a huge loss for Bollywood film buffs who have laughed at his comic scenes, enjoyed dialogues written by him or just loved his presence in a film. As '90s kids, we remember his roles in Govinda's films like Coolie No.1, Sajan Chale Sasural, Rajaji and so on. The actor had a presence that stood out despite whosoever was with him in the frame. It was a great feat if you consider that supporting actors had stereotypical roles or characters written for them. Kader started off as a supporting artiste with small roles. One of the most memorable ones is that of a fakir in Muqaddar Ka Sikander where he tells a distraught Amitabh Bachchan, 'Sukh toh bewafa hai ... chand dino ke liye aata hai aur chala jaata hai'. Luckily, his great talent was spotted by Dilip Kumar at an early age and he could make a huge contribution to Bollywood.

If you go through his life history, you will know that Mumbai was always his calling. He was born in Kabul, Afghanistan and it was his mother who had insisted that they leave the place after she lost three of her sons as they turned eight. Kader Khan was the youngest one. Life was not a bed of roses even in Mumbai where he saw his parents' separation. He has spoken at length about how they did sleep on a hungry stomach three days a week. Despite the odds, he completed his education on his mother's insistence. Kader held a degree in Civil Engineering and there are many from MH Saboo Siddik College, Byculla who still remember him as a good teacher. During his years as an academician, he was active in writing plays. So, when you talk about inspirational people, who make it in life starting from scratch, his name is right up there.

His golden period in Bollywood was from 1982 onwards as he started getting more screen time as a villain. Films like Biwi Ho Toh Aisi, Baap Numbri Beta Dus Numbri, Ghar Ho Toh Aisa saw him at the peak of his acting prowess. Iconic scenes from those films will make you smile even today. However, it is his jugalbandi with Govinda, which is best known. A talented writer, actor, philanthropist and an honest man, Kader Khan will forever remain an iconic figure in the hearts of fans!
