Happy New Year 2019: Supernatural overdose, obnoxious main leads, cringe-worthy plots - here're five things Indian TV needs to do away with

A New Year has begun and it is time to reflect on what we can do better in the coming months. The Indian TV industry is a huge money spinner for the economy and actors are ruling over social media. The only grouse remains the hackneyed content. While it is not a very bleak picture as some makers are trying to explore new avenues, here's a list of five things Indian TV can definitely do away with....

Set a bar on the supernatural

We understand that the genre is selling like hot cakes and people cannot get enough of the other world but there is a limit. While it is understandable when someone makes an out an out supernatural show, merging them with perfectly normal family dramas is just not done. Also, it would be nice if one channel stuck to one supernatural show at a time. Too much of anything spoils the show. We wish for so many things like better VFX and production but those will take time. Till then, can we not see daayans and chudails dancing on Bollywood tracks... Please!!

Misogyny not done

At a time when gender equality is a matter of discussion and concern, it is sad to see shows where the main purpose of a girl is to straighten a wayward guy. Let's accept that women are doing better stuff and some men have also moved ahead. The theme of a girl making a positive difference has been milked like anything by makers and creatives. While fun tashan wale shows are still acceptable, there are some shows that enjoy abusing female leads in the name of agnipariksha or whatever. Physical abuse, humiliation and torture in the name of entertainment is not cool any more.

Something for everyone

With OTT platforms mushrooming all over, people are exposed to great content. The biggest competition for TV is going to be from digital in the coming days, so it would be better if channels tried to cater to all age groups. As of now, some channels are known as rural ones while others are more urbane. We need shows for all groups and with different themes.

Simultaneous tracks across channels

We are sure many people have this complaint. A kidnapping track works well on a show and soon we see something similar in another serial. At times, it seems like people are copy-pasting each other's screenplay and tracks.

Mahasangams

It is extremely annoying to see the two different shows suddenly coming together for some celebration. Even worse are the forced dance performances for wedding tracks and so on. This year, there has been no mahasangams or special episode worth talking about. This is one area that needs improvement.
