From NTR to Jayalalithaa, 5 biopics in South cinema that we are looking forward to in 2019

2019 will be a feast for movie lovers in South Indian cinema with a slew of biopics gearing up for release. The year will begin with the biopic on the legendary actor and politician N.T. Rama Rao which will feature Nandamuri Balakrishna in the lead role. And later in the year, Telugu movie buffs will witness the journey of one of the most popular politicians, YS Rajasekhara Reddy, titled Yatra which features Malayalam megastar Mammootty in the titular role. As we enter a new year, here are five biopics in South Indian cinema that we are eagerly looking forward to:

NTR (Kathanayakudu and Mahanayakudu)

NTR biopic features Nandamuri Balakrishna in the titular role and will portray the cinematic and political life of the legendary actor N.T. Rama Rao. Directed by Krish Jagarlamudi, NTR biopic will be released in two parts Kathanayakudu and Mahanayakudu. The film also stars a slew of top stars like Vidya Balan, Rana Daggubati, Sumanth, Rakul Preet and Hansika Motwani among many others. NTR Kathanayakudu is slated to be released on January 9, 2019 and NTR Mahanayakudu will release on February 7, 2019 worldwide.

Jayalalithaa

A biopic on the former Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu J Jayalalithaa is in the pipeline which has gotten Tamil move buffs quite excited. Acclaimed actress Nithya Menen will be seen playing the titular role and will be directed by Vijay. The makers are yet to announce the release date of Jayalalithaa which is expected to be by the end of 2019.

Yatra

A biopic on former Chief Minister of Andhra Pradesh YS Rajasekhara Reddy, Yatra will have Malayalam actor Mammootty playing the titular role and will portray the sojourn of the popular politician. Directed by Mahi Raghava, the film will portray the prime period of YSR and will also showcase the popular tour of the state that he took on foot.

Pullela Gopichand

Sudheer Babu, who is also a badminton player, will be seen stepping into the shoes of the former Indian badminton player Pullela Gopichand. The film is yet to go on the floors and is expected to be ready for release by the end of 2019, reports reveal. Acclaimed filmmaker Praveen Sattaru will be directing this biopic and will portray the life of the most successful badminton player in the Indian sports arena.

Kunjali Marakkar

This Malayalam film is said to be based on the life of Marakkar, who was the first Muslim Navy chief of Zamorin. Mohanlal will be seen playing the title role in this exciting biopic which is being directed by ace filmmaker Priyadarshan. Actresses Keerthy Suresh and Kalyani Priyadarshan will be seen in key roles in this ambitious project. It is being reported that the film may hit the screens in mid-2019 which is yet to be confirmed by the makers.

Sye Raa Narasimha Reddy

Chiranjeevi will be back with Sye Raa Narasimha Reddy which is based on the life of one of India s first freedom fighters Uyyalawada Narasimha Reddy. Directed by Surender Reddy, Sye Raa is expected to be released during Dussehra in 2019 and the highlight will be Bollywood Shahenshah Amitabh Bachchan who too will be seen playing a brief role in the film. Fans of the megastar are eagerly waiting for the release of this big-budget film in Tollywood.
