Zero box office collections day 1: Shah Rukh Khan's film records second lowest opening day figures for a Christmas release in the last five years

Zero released yesterday, on December 21, to mixed reviews. Even the audience reaction to the film was pretty ambiguous. But that's not to say that it won't pick up over the weekend. In fact, the film has been fetching some positive word-of-mouth on social media, which should help it sail through Saturday and Sunday without much hassle. But the opening day collections of the film were strictly okay.

You would argue that a Rs 20.14 crore opening on a working Friday is pretty decent and we would agree, had it not been for the fact that the film had 4800 screens to its disposal and didn't face any competition this week. Kedarnath had released two weeks ago and Aquaman had released last week, which meant that Zero didn't have to strive for attention. Despite that, the film didn't garner the kind of money that we expect from Shah Rukh Khan's solo releases. What is also more disappointing is that the film is a Christmas release. Films fight for the date because the festival ensures that their film receives a good turnout at the theatres. But that wasn't the case with Zero. In fact, after Bajirao Mastani, this is the second film to clock in dismal figures on day 1. Bajirao Mastani still had to share its release date with SRK's Dilwale, which affected its turnout. But then the tables turned and it clocked in good business. Let's hope Zero manages to repeat the feat.

Here are the opening day collections of Christmas releases over the past five years:

Tiger Zinda Hai (2017) - Rs 34 crore

Dangal (2016) - Rs 29.78 crore

Bajirao Mastani (2015) - Rs 12.80 crore

Dilwale (2015) - Rs 21 crore

PK (2014) - Rs 26.63 crore

Dhoom 3 (2013) - Rs 36.22 crore

As you can see, Christmas releases are usually well-received by the audience. Now let's hope that Zero can look past its day 1 collection and go on to win the box office over the next week, till Simmba arrives to partake in the pie of collections. With the extended weekend and Christmas holiday, plus vacations, Zero does have quite a good chance of redeeming itself and we wish it does.
