Box office report: Ranveer Singh's Simmba opens to 40 percent occupancy; might score first day numbers on par with Padmaavat

Simmba is the last movie release of 2018 starring Ranveer Singh and Sara Ali Khan. A massy entertainer, the film has managed favourable reviews from the critics and the audience is loving it too. It's a typical Rohit Shetty commercial potboiler. We always knew Simmba has the potential to open really big at the box office and now our Trade Analyst, Amul Vikas Mohan, Editor Super Cinema, also has similar notions about it. His predictions say Ranveer might be on his way to get yet another blockbuster with Simmba after Padmaavat. That's because the opening day numbers of both the films could be the same.

Speaking to us, Mohan informs, "It's opened good. The advance bookings have been around Rs 7.5 crore. It's a good opening and a massy one at that. The occupancy has been around 40 per cent. There are different parameters at play here. A family film burns brighter by the end of the day. Massy films tend to open better during the day and then find a place to stay put there. Evening shows will be good for this film as well. It will definitely be Rs 18 crore plus opening today." Padmaavat's first day numbers were Rs 19 crore last January.

When asked if Simmba has the potential to be yet another Rs 300 crore earner, Mohan explains, "There are movies, in the next few weeks like Uri. So, Rs 300 crore will be a big number. It really needs to perform out of its skin here over the weekend and going into the new year. It has the advantage of Monday being a holiday. It needs to maximise the weekend numbers, it needs the growth. So, it's difficult to predict now unless we know what the weekend will be like. Right now, it looks rosy, so Rs 18 crore today, maybe Rs 20-22 crore tomorrow and Rs 25 crore on Sunday. Probably another Rs 30 crore on Monday, then we are looking at big numbers. But that's a very best-case scenario. The numbers can also change by the end of the day, it could be slightly higher or say marginally low. But that range is good, that range is what Ranveer works at."
