Days before her wedding, Deepika Padukone wrote a letter about her battle against depression and anxiety - read excerpts

Deepika Padukone did us all a big favour when she spoke about mental health and silent killers like depression. She did so to an entire country that was not used to celebrities being vocal about or talking about their struggle with inner demons and in a way, championed the cause for a lot more people who fight with anxiety every day. Not just opening doors, she sat there to have conversations about mental illness and worked towards removing the stigma attached to it. Her foundation, Live Love Laugh is proof.

And that wasn't the end of it; rather a remarkable start to a journey that has stayed and will always stay close to her heart. In fact, in another endeavour, DP who recently got married to Ranveer Singh, penned a powerful note about depression and her personal tussles when she was once diagnosed with it. It was for Elle India, as the magazine shared on their Instagram page along with a caption that read, "A few days before her wedding @deepikapadukone wrote a letter addressing her struggle with anxiety and depression, for our 22nd Anniversary Issue. By publicly talking about her own battles, she empowered many to reach out and seek help. Her letter is full of empathy and kindness, a reminder that (in the words of Stephen Fry) it will be sunny one day ." Check out the post here.

"As some of you may know, in the summer of 2014, I was diagnosed with anxiety and clinical depression. Fortunately, timely professional help coupled with the support of caregivers around me, empowered me towards the path of recovery. As I began to read more about the subject, I realised that there were millions of others like me who were suffering in silence.

Subsequently, as difficult as it was for me at the time, I decided to talk about my personal journey on national television with the hope of encouraging others to also seek help. Thereafter, in june 2015, I founded the Live, Love, Laugh Foundation to create awareness about stress, anxiety and depression, and reduce the stigma attached to mental illness."

Earlier, Deepika had no qualms about opening up about her fight, in a bid to urge others to do the same and seek appropriate and timely help. And the rest as they say, is history.
