#BLBestOf2018: Newsmakers from down South: From Sri Reddy to Thalapathy Vijay's Sarkar - here's who made it to the list

We are a few days away from entering a new year and gear up for another exciting year of activities. 2018 has been quite an eventful year with few revelations being made in the South film industry. While Bollywood witnessed the #MeToo movement, South industry had its own movement when actress Sri Reddy threw a few allegations on top actors and filmmakers. This was followed up by Chinmayi Sripada s corroboration and allegations on veteran writer Vairamuthu, which shook the Tamil film industry. Here s a look back at the top newsmakers of 2018 from the Southern film industry:

Sri Reddy:

This piece of news was one of the biggest jolts to the Telugu film industry after the young actress alleged that she was used by many top filmmakers and actors. From Abhiram Daggubati to Nani, Sri Reddy threw allegations on many Telugu and Tamil actors. And guess what...Sri Reddy did not spare celebs from other industries too. Sri Reddy even alleged that former Indian cricketer Sachin Tendulkar too has a dirty past. But all these faded over a period and things got lost in time.

Nandamuri Harikrishna:

Jr NTR s father and popular actor-politician, Nandamuri Harikrishna, died in a fatal car accident while he was traveling to attend a wedding. The veteran actor passed away right after the collision which sent shock waves in the Telugu film industry.

Post Nandamuri Harikrishna's sudden demise, Nagarjuna s Devadas song, Vishal s Pandemkodi 2 teaser, Naga Chaitanya s Shailaja Reddy Alludu trailer launch postponed

Vijay s Sarkar:

Thalapathy Vijay s Sarkar had a terrific run at the box office post release and turned out to be the biggest hit in Tamil this year. However, the film has had its own share of controversies. The government of Tamil Nadu urged the makers to chop out a few scenes from the film after finding them objectionable. However, the makers refused to do so, leading to a chaotic situation. A non-bailable arrest warrant was issued against director AR Murugadoss for the scenes in Sarkar, which were later dropped after a court hearing.

2.0:

The magnum opus, 2.0, starring Rajinikanth released in November this year and went on to become one of the biggest releases in India. 2.0 has earned a gross collection of more than Rs 600 crore worldwide and is on the verge of beating the biggest film ever - Baahubali. 2.0 now stands as the highest collector in Tamil cinema beating Rajinikanth s previous film Enthiran.

#MeToo - Chinmayi Sripada:

India witnessed the biggest ever movement against sexual misbehaviour in the form of #MeToo in 2018 which shook the whole nation. From top journalists to filmmakers, many were being sacked from their positions after allegations kept flowing in. And in South Indian cinema, singer-dubbing artist Chinmayi Sripada led from the front and pulled the strings together in the #MeToo movement. Chinmayi not only corroborated many stories in the movement, but also alleged that lyricist Vairamuthu had tried to misbehave with her during one of the concerts in mid-2000. This led to her being removed from the dubbing union in Tamil and heating up the movement.

Samantha Akkineni and her million-dollar run:

In 2018, Samantha Akkineni became the first ever South Indian actress to be part of four $1 million films at the US box office. Samantha Akkineni began the year with Ram Charan-starrer Rangasthalam which was the biggest hit of the year in Telugu cinema. Later, she followed it up with Mahanati which was the biopic on the yesteryear iconic actress Savitri. Sam then appeared in the Tamil thriller Irumbu Thirai which starred Vishal in the lead role. Samantha then closed the year with U-Turn which was one of the small big films in South Indian cinema. All these four films have earned a gross collection of more than $1 million at the US box office.
