#BLBestOf2018: From Black Panther and Avengers: Infinity War to Solo and Skyscraper, five biggest hits and flops of the year

From action to drama, romance and comedy you name it and 2018 had it all. Hollywood witnessed a potpourri of releases this year. On one hand, we witnessed an all-black movie shatter records with just the opening weekend box office collection and all an Asian cast caught everyone s attention, there were movies that looked extremely promising but failed to meet our expectations at the time of release. We had movies like Black Panther, Avengers: Infinity War and A Silent Place blowing our minds over, and there were movies like Mother! and Skyscraper that did not impress the audience. And let s not get started on that Star Wars movie that released in the summer.

But there were some movies that did amazing business at the box office and some that bombed terribly. Instead of listing down every movie in a hit to flop order, we have handpicked five movies which left a mark at the box office and five that did not perform well. (Note: The movies are ranked as per worldwide box office collection and figures have been recorded by Box Office Mojo.)

Starting off with the hits first:

Avengers: Infinity War

The Marvel movie is hands down the biggest hit of the year. The Avengers movie witnessed almost all Marvel Cinematic Universe superheroes unite to fight against a force like Thanos and every Marvel fan wanted to stand a witness to this epic battle. As a result, Avengers: Infinity War earned $2,048 billion. The box office collection has resulted in Avengers: Infinity War becoming the fourth highest earning movie of all time.

Black Panther:

The Chadwick Boseman starrer was the first blockbuster of 2018. Black Panther was the first Marvel movie with an all-black cast recorded the second highest box office collection of 2018. The film has registered $1.35 billion. However, the movie stands as the highest grosser of US, surpassing Avengers: Infinity War at the domestic front.

Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom

Despite bad reviews, Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom went on to become the third highest grossing movie of 2018. The Chris Pratt and Bryce Dallas Howard starrer recorded a whopping $1,304.9 billion collection with $888.1 million registered at the international box office and China being the biggest contributor.

Incredibles 2:

The animated Disney won hearts from the word go. Not only did it earn a good opening, it went on to find the fourth spot on the highest box office collectors of 2018. The movie registered $1,242.5 billion with 49 percent contributed by the US box office and 51 percent contributed by the international markets.

Venom:

Venom is yet another movie where the reviews did not impact the box office collection. Yes, the reviews of the Sony led Marvel cinematic universe did not receive good reviews however that did not stop Tom Hardy and Spider-Man fans from buying a ticket to the movie. As a result, Venom earned $854.5 million on the worldwide front. The film s worldwide collection is majorly contributed by international markets.

Other movies that shined this year include Mission: Impossible - Fallout ($791.0 million), Deadpool 2 ) $735.6 million), Bohemian Rhapsody $667.1 million, Ant-Man and the Wasp ($622.7 million) and Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald ($612.9 million)

And the flops include

A Wrinkle in Time

The young-adult science-fiction/fantasy novel may have won awards but the film version of A Wrinkle in Time failed to lure audience to the theatres. The Disney-produced film was directed by Ava DuVernay and featured Reese Witherspoon and Oprah Winfrey. The project sounded brilliant on paper but it did not impress the audience. As a result, the movie earned $132.7 million at the worldwide box office. The movie was reportedly made with a budget of $103 million.

Solo: A Star Wars Story

The Disney-Lucasfilm was disastrous. The movie, which was told the story of Han Solo, did not manage to bring in the audience to listen to Han s story. The film was reportedly made with a budget of $250 million and earned only $393 million on the worldwide box office front.

Pacific Rim: Uprising

Made with a budget of $150 million, the John Boyega starrer earned merely $290.8 million at the worldwide front. The bad word of mouth could be one of the many reasons this movie tanked.

Skyscraper

Following the success of Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle, Dwayne The Rock Johnson was all set to wow us with Skyscraper but fell flat on his face. The actor was seen leaping between two buildings in the posters but audience wasn t interested in seeing why he was doing what he was doing. As a result, the movie, made with a budget of $129 million, ended its theatrical run at $304.1 million.

Robin Hood:

Clearly the audience was least interested in Robin Hood. The Taron Egerton-starrer was made with a budget of $100 million but made only $72.9 million worldwide.
