Aquaman: Jason Momoa and James Wan can help DC tide through the threat from other December releases and have smooth sailing on Indian shores

It is a crucial weekend for DC Films. After having had a dismal run at the box office with Justice League last year, the production house would want to hit the bull s eye with Aquaman. Not only would they want to have a good run at the US box office, Warner Bros and DC would want to have a memorable run on the international front as well. The movie has already got off to a good start in China last week. The movie released a week in advance and earned about $94 million from the Chinese market alone. And given that the movie releases in India this weekend, we think it would work wonders at the Indian box office over the weekend.

Why? We have quite a few reasons as to why we think Aquaman can work in India. Take a look...

It s Jason Momoa!

Anyone watching Game of Thrones will instantly recognise Jason. The Hawaiian actor played Khal Drogo in the HBO TV series and earned himself a good fan following, even in India. The actor went on to play roles in shows like Frontier, but his portrayal as Aquaman got heads turning and it ignited a lot of curiosity among fans last year when he appeared in Justice League. This fan following and curiosity will benefit the movie immensely.

James Wan

If Momoa s pop culture references aren t enough, director James Wan s association to Aquaman takes the movie a notch higher. Does the name ring a bell? For those who are still scratching their heads, let us give you a quick introduction. The filmmaker is the mastermind behind horror movies like The Conjuring, Insidious and Annabelle series. Remember the experience of watching those horrific tales come to life? Now imagine how beautifully he would bring the underwater world to life!

It s a first

By that we mean that you don t need to be a DC fan or have watched a slew of older DC movies to understand Aquaman. Just like Wonder Woman, Aquaman is also an establishing story, giving movie buffs a chance to enjoy the movie without really knowing the backstory. This is a huge advantage for the movie considering there is no reading required.

No competition

The DC movie has almost zero competition at Indian box office. The next big release in Bollywood is Shah Rukh Khan-starrer Zero. Aquaman has one week to mint money at the box office before the Shah Rukh storm hits.

Gleaming reviews

Almost every international film critic has loved the movie. Many critics echoed the emotion that they had a fun time watching the movie. Ever since the international reviews were out, the movie has been garnering a good buzz and the good word-of-mouth will certainly make an impact in India.

While we are quite sure the Indian audience will take to it like fish to water, we will have to wait until this weekend to see if Aquaman is going to make it at the Indian box office.
