It was a little past 11:30 at the JW Marriott in Mumbai. Christian Bale sat opposite me with a banner of Mowgli behind him. The renowned Batman actor was in India to promote the upcoming live-motion movie, in which he plays Bagheera. The actor is known to play several different characters on the big screen, so imagine my curiosity to know how he turned into the black panther from the Rudyard Kipling story. Turns out, like always, Bale put in a lot of effort in adapting the motions of the animal so that he could do justice to the role.
Speaking to Bollywood Life during his recent India tour, for the world premiere of the movie, the Hollywood actor shared that he had countless questions for director Andy Serkis when he joined the movie. I didn t understand it in the beginning - what was important, what was not important. When you first begin anything, you don t understand the priorities. (Andy) asked me to study panthers, he asked me to study the movement of panthers, Bale shared.
The actor also spoke about comparisons between Mowgli and Disney s The Jungle Book. He said, The irony was, as we were making this film, Disney was making another Jungle Book. Very different interpretations. You don t have to make a choice between which one you like.
It is a testament to Kipling s writings. So, different films could come from the same source material, he added.

Apart from Bale, Mowgli also features director Andy himself as Baloo, Benedict Cumberbatch as Shere Khan, Cate Blanchett as Kaa and Rohan Chand in the titular role of Mowgli. The movie will be available for streaming starting December 7 on Netflix.
