Kavacham Movie Review: This potboiler offers very few thrilling moments as against what was promised by the makers

Kavacham is directed by newcomer Sreenivas Mamilla and stars Bellamkonda Sai Sreenivas, Kajal Aggarwal and Mehreen Pirzada in lead roles. And when you look at the star cast, it sets your expectation at about 7 on a scale of 1 to 10. But as the thriller, as claimed by the makers, begins, thoughts drift to questioning if it really is one. Sreenivas plays, Vijay, a sincere cop who vows to discharge his duties to the T and goes by the rule book. Kajal plays Samyukta, a millionaire who is heiress to property worth millions. Mehreen plays Lavanya who is Samyukta's sister. Neil Nitin Mukesh too features as Vikram Aditya who is Samyukta and Lavanya's cousin and son to Mukesh Rishi who is the caretaker of the sisters' property after their parents pass away in their childhood.

Vijay gets stuck in the labyrinth built by Vikram Aditya who eyes the millions worth of property which Samyukta would be preparing to take over in a few months. Kavacham is the story of how Vijay resolves this tangle and saves his love interest Samyukta. But wait, it isn't that easy! The story goes back and forth in time and leaves you wondering where exactly you are positioned as a patient audience.

What's hot:

A visual grandeur laced with stylish appearances of every character makes this a very good watch. The thriller aspect of Kavacham comes right before the intermission which leaves you intrigued and wanting to not leave your seat. As you start feeling a little tired of keeping up with the plot, a surprise element pops up every now and then, thus managing to retain your attention. The background score by Thaman SS is on par with the build-up the director creates for some particular scenes and needs a special mention. Saaho star Neil Nitin Mukesh begins his innings in Telugu with Kavacham and looks suave as a wise antagonist. But, like in any potboiler, he cannot be wiser than the protagonist.

What's not:

Kavacham has quite a few emotional scenes which is a litmus test for any actor. Sreenivas tries very hard to emote but doesn't manage to go past the finishing line. With multiple flashbacks, the film leaves us struggling to identify which is the present part of the story. The predictability of the tale just increases as the story progresses and also makes you see that the director has sort of lost the plot at times. It is obvious that since Vijay is a sincere cop, he will go to any extent to discharge his duties but the character too loses its bearing in certain scenes and leaves you with multiple questions.

BL Verdict:

Kavacham will tease you with very few thrilling moments as opposed to what the director promised and crawls its way to the climax of the plot with more predictability than the surprise elements. However, for a debutant director, it is not a bad attempt. But despite that, we go with a 2 for this one.
