Box office report: Sushant Singh Rajput and Sara Ali Khan's Kedarnath gets a good start but 2.0 can affect its run

Kedarnath, which marks the Bollywood debut of Sara Ali Khan, released today and has opened to good occupancy. We spoke to trade analyst Amul Vikas Mohan, Editor of Super Cinema, and he seems pretty happy with the first-day turnout. He gushes, "It is doing good, decent enough. It will earn in the range of Rs 6 crore to Rs 6.5 crore on day 1. Good enough range for a film like this. But the budget is a bit high. This is a family kind of film so evening shows might pick up." But we had to ask him if Kedarnath has anything to fear from 2.0's Hindi version, which has managed to do tremendous business. And the answer is in the affirmative.

When asked if Rajinikanth and Akshay Kumar's film will affect Kedarnath, Amul said, "Of course, it will because even on a Thursday 2.0 did Rs 8 crores. It's a massive number. 2.0 is really doing well especially the Hindi version. It has done tremendously well on its first week. Even when there is a competition from Kedarnath this time around, I feel that people will still want to go out and watch 2.0. I don't think that is going to change." We also asked if Aquaman poses any threat for the film next weekend but Amul reveals that will not be the case. "Aquaman is a different genre. It was a part of Justice League. It is pretty hot in terms of that but I don't think there will be any direct competition to Kedarnath there," he reasons. He also asserts that if Kedarnath manages to make good money over the first weekend, it will be able to do the same next weekend as well.

While Amul feels Kedarnath has the potential to do better, he also reveals as to how its budget might become a deterrent to its success. "The budget of Kedarnath is really high, we all know that. That could be a problem. But I still feel this kind of opening is pretty decent for a film with a newcomer in the lead. The budget is high because it has changed hands twice and all of that. And then how much went into P&A. So if you consider that, the Rs 6-6.5 crore opening is slightly lower. It is always going to be a word of mouth kind of a film. It's a romantic film but is also from the disaster genre. These films are generally called slow burners," explains Mohan.

Well, it seems everything depends on how Kedarnath fares in the opening weekend now.
